So I’m a terrible person and have never, until tonight, seen a Studio Ghibli film, but we just watched Spirited Away and holy crap was it good
I want to watch more but don’t know which to watch next. I know Totoro and Princess Mononoke but I only know they exist, I dunno anything but that.
@twisterghost the gf and i spent 2021 just going through this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Studio_Ghibli_works in mostly chronological order
@twisterghost this is sad. You should watch the usual suspects, but I’d also put in a vote for lesser known ones like Porco Roso (a pig fights fascists in a World War I seaplane) and Pom Poko (you’ll never see a movie more focused on raccoon testicles).
@twisterghost I really liked Owls moving castle and Castle in the sky
Totoro is really nice, even being a little more "childish" (it has a different reading when seen as an adult)
I found Mononoke a little more sad than the others
Porco Rosso is funny and its political content is nice to see given the current worldwide political ambiance
@twisterghost also if you can, not ghibli's films but I really liked Wolf children (a bit slow but very cool if you are a parent), The boy and the beast (amazing animations and soundtrack) and Belle (really beautiful)
@twisterghost Gonna do you a favor and warn you away from Grave of the Fireflies. It's a good film, but it is fucking HEAVY, and you should be in a good headspace before diving in to it.
@twisterghost Oh, my, I could talk about this for hours.
My personal favorites are Kiki's delivery service and Whispers from the heart.
Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind is also very very good.
But honestly all of them (except the earthsea adaptation) are great.
Maybe you can say what you liked most of Spirited Away and I can fine tune my recommendation based on that? Ghibli has a large range of movie types.
Did you like the animation and visuals? Howls moving castle has a similar style.
Did you like the monsters, the fantasy and the world? Mononoke has more of that.
Did you like that the story was not so simple and even bad characters have some good in them? Nausicaa, Porco Rosso
Did you like that in the middle of magic, it was really the story of a girl growing up? Kiki's Delivery Service
Do you want similar themes and beauty, but without all the magic? Whisper from the heart.
@twisterghost I'm really curious about your impressions on this and other movies, as you see them. Ghibli movies are super fun to talk about.
Start with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky. You may recognize a lot of material from these two that have popped up in dozens of other movies and games as homage pieces or cameos.
I'll also give another vote to Porco Rosso, both because of the timeliness of its message and how fun it is to watch.
@twisterghost My Neighbour Totoro is amazing, but it's very gentle and kid friendly. If you're not into that then Mononoke or -- personal favourite -- Naussica.
I love Porko Rosso, but it's not really fantasy or SF.
Beware of Grave of the Fireflies -- visually stunning but it must be the bleakest movie ever made.
If you're okay with kid-friendly then definitely try Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Cat Returns and Castle in the Sky.
@twisterghost no one has mentioned Ponyo, which is a crime, though Howl’s Moving Castle is probably my favorite
